What is Iritis and How is it Treated?

Iritis, or anterior uveitis, is the inflammation of the iris, the colored part of your eye. This condition can cause redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision.

If left untreated, iritis can lead to more serious complications. We will discuss iritis treatment and help you understand the condition better.

Symptoms of Iritis

Recognizing iritis symptoms as soon as possible is essential for effective treatment. Common signs include:

  • Redness in the eye
  • Eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision
  • Small or irregularly shaped pupil

If you experience any of these symptoms, seeking medical attention promptly is important.

Causes of Iritis

Several factors can cause iritis. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus
  • Infections such as herpes or tuberculosis
  • Eye injuries
  • Genetic factors

Sometimes, the exact cause of iritis may remain unknown. Your doctor will perform a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause.

Iritis Treatment Options

Treating iritis usually involves reducing inflammation and managing pain. The first line of treatment often includes steroid eye drops, which effectively reduce inflammation and pain. These drops are usually applied several times a day and work by suppressing the immune response that causes inflammation. Dilating eye drops are frequently prescribed along with steroid drops.

It also helps reduce pain by relaxing the muscles in the iris, preventing the pupil from constricting and reducing the risk of complications such as synechiae, where the iris sticks to the lens or cornea.

In more severe cases of iritis, oral medications may be necessary. Oral steroids or other anti-inflammatory drugs can help control inflammation when eye drops are insufficient.

These medications work systemically, targeting inflammation throughout the body. This approach particularly helps if you have iritis associated with an autoimmune disease or systemic infection. Treating any underlying conditions is also a critical component of iritis management.
